Better Social, Public Benefits Corporation is aiming to never collect or store any personal identifiable information. We are already collecting less personal data than any other social network, and are working on reducing the amount further. Other than with the previous generations of social networks, these principles are not just empty words, but legally enshrined in our constitution as Public Benefits Corporation.
Better Social, Public Benefits Corporation, and the Helio app (“Better Social”) utilize state-of-the-art security and anonymization to provide private messaging and anonymous & pseudonymous social networking to users worldwide. You agree to our Terms of Service (“Terms”) by installing or using our apps, services, or website (together, “Services”).
Information you provide
Account Information. To create an account you must register for our Service via third party humanID. humanID a nonprofit service provided by the Foundation for a Human Internet, a U.S. based nonprofit. humanID creates a unique user code while storing your phone number for a maximum of 10 minutes before deleting it.
Better Social at no point has access to your phone number, but relies on humanID as trusted and independent authentication partner. The user IDs that humanID provides are unique to our service and would therefore never be matched with advertising IDs or other identifiers used by the Ad tech industry.
You may optionally add other information to your account, such as a profile name and profile picture.
Messages. We aim to encrypt and decentralize the storage and transition of messages in the future, as we achieve the means to build such advanced technology.
Additional technical information is stored on our servers, including randomly generated authentication tokens, keys, push tokens, and other material that is necessary to establish calls and transmit messages. We’re committed to decrease the amount of data stored per user on our servers over time.
Contacts. Better deliberately choose to not use the common “discover your contacts” functionality via your phone’s address book to increase privacy.
User Support. If you contact Better Social User Support, any personal data you may share with us is kept only for the purposes of researching the issue and contacting you about your case.
Managing your information. You can manage your personal information in your profile and application Settings. For example, you can delete your account and all associated data via the Settings option “Delete my Data & Account”.
Information we may share
Third Parties. We work with a very limited number of third parties to provide some of our Services. For example, our identification partner humanID enables our anonymous account creation. Third party GetStream is provided software to enable our messaging and social graph functionality. These providers are bound by their Privacy Policies to safeguard that information.
We do NOT provide your data to any company using it for advertising, not directly or indirectly.
Other instances where Better Social may need to share your data
To meet any applicable law of democratic nations (, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request. We will provide maximum transparency to you if such a request happens, and guarantee via our constitution that we will never provide non-democratic governments information that could be used to identify individuals.
To enforce applicable Terms, including investigation of potential violations.
To detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security, or technical issues.
To protect against harm to the rights, property, or safety of Better Social, our users, or the public as required or permitted by the law of democratic countries.
We based the definition of ‘democratic country’ on the yearly evaluation of nonprofit Freedom House (https://freedomhouse.org/).
